Abstract
All visitors, both hikers and anglers, are asked to register when they arrive at the McCloud River Preserve. We also request each angler who fishes to record their fishing data when they depart. The Preserve has been collecting this information for the last 40-plus years and we use it as an index to estimate relative trout abundance from year to year. These data also provide a basis to assess the health, population structure, and demography of the fishery over time. It’s important to remember that the numbers presented below don’t represent actual totals, just reported totals. Still, assuming no drastic year-to-year changes in reporting tendencies or in the average fishing expertise of visitors to the Preserve, interannual comparisons using this data can provide a pulse-check on the health of our trout fisheries.
