Data Collection

Natural color flood imagery was collected using a DJI Phantom 4 Pro quadcopter operated by a Federal Aviation Administration Part 107 certified remote pilot. The aircraft’s camera specifications included a 1” CMOS sensor, 24 mm lens, mechanical shutter (1/2000 – 8 sec), and resolution of 20 megapixels making it ideal for survey-grade mapping. Prior to and during flight operations, Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs; identifies where a pilot can fly) and Aviation Weather Report (METAR) and Terminal Aerodrome Forecast (TAF) safety-critical information was obtained. The flight was conducted on 20 September 2019 between 10:05 – 10:20 am EST with northeast winds of 9 mph, visibility of 10 statute miles, sky cover broken at 2500 m above ground level, and temperature of 81° F. The flight mission was planned using Drones Made Easy Map Pilot due its compatibility with the aircraft. A single parallel pattern (zig-zag scheme) was flown at 60 m above ground level, 70% side lap and 75% overlap, and 2.5 cm ground sampling distance.
