Abstract
If infrared mapping results are not definitive in identifying groundwater discharge locations, we will deploy another ground-based temperature measurement tool, a fiber optic distributed temperature sensor (FO-DTS), along specific areas of interest that have high potential for contaminated groundwater discharge. FO-DTS can be deployed directly on nearshore sediments along a 1 km stretch of shoreline and left in place for a few weeks to capture temperature changes over ranges of tidal cycles and sun/weather conditions (Henderson and others, 2009). FO-DTS measures temperature continuously along the length of the deployed fiber at a specified frequency, for example, every 15 minutes, so it provides highly refined temporal data along a transect, albeit not two-dimensional spatial data such as the infrared camera can provide.
