ABSTRACT:

The dataset supports the findings of the manuscript entitled: Navigating Greenhouse Gas Emission Unknowns: A Hydroacoustic Examination of Mediterranean Climate Reservoirs. The manuscript presents results based on in-situ monitoring at 6 different Mediterranean-climate reservoirs. Uvas, Chesbro, Stevens Creek, and Almaden reservoirs are located in the Santa Clara Valley Water District, San Jose, California, USA. Iznajar and Cubillas reservoirs are located near the city of Granada, in southern Spain. The monitoring of the California reservoir was conducted from October 2020 to August 2023. The monitoring for Iznajar and Cubillas occured in September 2022. The main goal of the monitoring was to measure the spatial variability of gas storage in submerged reservoir sediments and how it compared to locations of bubbling hotspots. The free gas stored in the sediment matrix was derived from an extended version of a pre-existing model using the maximum backscatter of the acoustic return collected during a hydroacoustic survey. We found that the previously established model tended to underestimate gas storage in shallower, siltier areas and overestimate it in larger-grained sediment zones. In response, we introduced a refined model that clarifies gas volume patterns across sediment types. The findings are discussed in the manuscript.

Therefore, the dataset provided as an xlsx file includes separate sheets for:
- Sediment measurements of % H2O, loss on ignition (LOI), Organic Carbon (OrgC), particle size distribution.
- Measured free gas in the sediment for all study sites.
- Concentration of CO2, CH4, and N2O in free gas for all study sites.
- Sediment type for Uvas reservoir.
- Sonde and CTD profiles for the summer 2021 acoustic survey on Uvas reservoir.
- Gas content in the sediment estimated from the 2021 acoustic survey on Uvas reservoir

Explanations and units are provided in column labels. NaN refers to missing data.
